This partly anthropochorous species is indigenous in parts of Europe and Asia. The northernmost occurrences in Fennoscandia and other outliers are casual. The southeastern population (Ukraine-C. Asia) is distinguished as var. stepposa (Klok.) Schischk. The species has been introduced into N. America. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 140.
