This variable species occurs as a native plant in W., C. and S. Europe (approximately up to the line on the map) and adjacent parts of Asia. It has spread northwards, sometimes as an ornamental and medicinal plant, and has escaped from gardens. It has been introduced into N. America and scattered places in other parts of the world.
