This polymorphic species includes taxa which are sometimes incompletely distinguished, such as V. sambucifolia Mik. (syn.: V. excelsa Poir.), marked separately on the map (broken line) and V. salina Pleijel along the coasts of Fennoscandia. The species has been introduced into N. America (probably V. officinalis s. str.).
