This arctic-montane species s. str. (subsp. pygmaeus) occurs in Eurasia and N. America. In addition, known occurrences of the closely related, arctic subsp. sabinei (R. Br.) Hult. and the hybrid between R. nivalis L. and R. pygmaeus are marked on the map. This arrangement is, however, tentative and may need revision. The species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 66 and map 58).
