This species occurs as a native plant in most of Europe (except N) and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia Minor. The distribution in Russia is somewhat unclear. At least the three northernmost occurrences in Fennoscandia are adventive. The species has been introduced into eastern and western N. America and New Zealand.
