This species is restricted to Europe. It includes the subsp. arenaria (Waldst. & Kit.) Domin S of the broken line. The closely related G. uralensis Less. and G. sambukii Schischk. (N. Siberia) are also mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 141.
