This species s. lat. includes also S. ciliata Fr. (S. apetala subsp. apetala in Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 148). There are considerable gaps within the hatched area. It has been introduced into scattered places outside the central, hatched area, possibly also into Africa, S. America, S. Australia and New Zealand.
