This mainly boreal species occurs in most of Europe (except N and S), parts of Asia and eastern and central N. America. Thus, it belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 168 and map 149). It has been found in postglacial layers far north of the present range in Fennoscandia (cf. Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 412). The closely related C. comosa Boott in N. America and Mexico is tentatively mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 79.
