This species occurs in large parts of Europe and Asia. At least two subspecies have been distinguished (Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 321), viz. subsp. elata in W. and C. Europe, replaced eastwards by subsp. omskiana (Meinsh.) Jales (cf. map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 70). Knowledge of the distribution in Asia is incomplete.
