1810 Tanacetum vulgare L.

Syn.: Chrysanthemum vulgare (L.) Bernh.

This species s. lat. is now widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The origin of the species s. str. is uncertain but may be looked for in the southern and eastern parts of the European range. Formerly it was cultivated for medicinal and ornamental purposes in gardens from which it escaped. Mast of the Asiatic population is sometimes distinguished as a separate species, T. boreale Fisch. ex DC., or as var. boreale (Fisch. ex DC.) Trautv. & Mey. T. vulgare has been introduced into N. and S. America, S. Australia and New Zealand.
