This mainly European species has a suboceanic tendency of distribution. The population on Madeira and the Canary Is. is distinguished as subsp. canariensis (Pitard) Grau. The species is favoured by agriculture. It has been introduced for instance into S. Africa, India, N. America and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 364.
