This species is now widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Its original distribution as a native plant is uncertain (Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 162 f.). It is introduced as a fodder plant and partly naturalized in, for instance, N. Europe and the British Isles, S. Africa, N. America, Tasmania and New Zealand. Nowadays the species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 276 and map 267). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 236.
