This species s. str. occurs originally in Europe and W. Asia. Moreover, the distribution of the closely related S. pseudopentandra Flod. in eastern Asia is mapped. The population in Caucasus is identified as S. pentandroides A. Skvorts. In China S. paraplesia C. Schn. occurs. All these species form together a complex which may be regarded as S. pentandra L. s. lat. (cf. Meusel et al. 1965 [Text], p. 455). In this sense the species is mapped by Meusel et al. 1965 (Karten), p. 113. The species is introduced into eastern N. America. Thus, it is not a true amphiatlantic plant.
