This species probably originates from the Mediterranean region and adjacent parts of Asia. It has been widely spread as a weed in most of Europe and for instance to C. and S. Africa, E. Asia, N. and S. America, Australia and New Zealand. It has nowadays an incompletely circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 226 and map 215). The closely related Asiatic L. cuneatum Nevski is also tentatively mapped.
