This polymorphic species is almost entirely restricted to Europe and adjacent parts of Asia and Africa. Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 148 reports seven subspecies, each of them (except subsp. perennis) with rather distinct, restricted distribution areas. It has been introduced into outlying localities, even into a few place in N. America. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 150.
