This nowadays widespread species occurs as an indigenous plant mostly along the coasts of W. and S. Europe and S. Asia. This widely cultivated plant has spread here and there from gardens, for instance in N. Europe, S. Africa, SE. Asia, Australia, New Zealand, N. and S. America. It has nowadays an incompletely circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 200 and map 191). The map is incomplete in several respects. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 310.
