This widespread species probably originates from the steppe areas of C. and E. Europe, the Mediterranean region and W. Asia. From there it has been introduced into large parts of Fennoscandia, the British Isles, S. Africa, N. America and New Zealand. It is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 228 and map 217), although there is a wide gap in Siberia. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 42.
