The geographical origin of this species s. lat. may be located to the area around the Black Sea, although also N. America is mentioned (Dunal). It has been widely spread as a medicinal plant und is now almost a cosmopolitan weed in the temperate and warmer regions. Nowadays it is an almost circumpolar plant (Hultén, Circumpol.
