This rather variable species originates most likely from Europe, N. Africa and W. and C. Asia, from where it has spread to many parts of the world, for instance to S. Africa, E. Asia, N. and S. America, Australia and New Zealand. S of the line through S. Europe subsp. silvicola (Guss.) H. Lindb. also occurs. The present distribution is circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 204 and map 193).
