This polymorphic species originates from parts of Europe and Asia but is widely distributed with cultivation. Thus, it has been introduced for instance into eastern N. America, E. Asia and New Zealand and partly naturalized there. Especially in E. Asia, the species is variable. From the Baikal area eastwards, the closely related R. pauciflorum Turcz. occurs.
