This species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America (subsp. meridionale [Butters] Claus. In Mexico). Subsp. virginianum in N. America and partly Asia and subsp. europaeum (Ångstr.) Claus. In Europe, Asia and N. America are mapped separately. Subsp. europaeum may be extinct on the island of Åland (Finland). The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 190 and map 179), although the difference in total distribution between this species and the amphi-atlantic B. lanceolatum is not great according to our present knowledge.
