This somewhat variable species is part of a complex of related species. Two of these, S. hulténii Flod. And S. bakko Kimura in E. Asia, are mapped here. Within the area marked by a broken line in N. Europe subsp. coaetanea (Hartm.) Hiit. occurs. S. caprea has been introduced into N. America. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 114.
