This species probably has a C. European-W. Siberian origin. Cf. map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 54. Subsp. alpestris (Wahlenb.) Seland. is indigenous in N. Fennoscandia. Subsp. lagurijormis (Schur.) Tzvel. occurs in the E. and S. Carpathians. Subsp. pratensis has been widely spread through cultivation for instance to N. Europe with the Faeroes, lceland and Spitsbergen, to E. Asia, N. and S. America and New Zealand. The present distribution is circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 212 and map 201).
