This distinct species occurs in Europe (except N and SW) and the adjacent parts of Asia. The southeastern C. orientalis Mill. is also mapped, mainly overlapping the southern and southeastern range of C. betulus. C. betulus is cultivated far beyond its natura! distribution area, e. g. nearly all over the British Isles and in Scandinavia. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 118.
