This species occurs as a native and adventive plant in Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. It is sometimes cultivated as a fodder grass. Where such is the case, it has been widely spread in the rural landscape, for instance northwards. Outlying occurrences are casual. It has been introduced at least into S. Africa, E. Asia, N. and S. America, Java, Australia and New Zealand. The species is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 216 and map 205). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 45.
