This arctic-montane species occurs disjunctly in Europe and on Greenland. In Sierra Nevada (Spain) subsp. nevadensis H. Lindb. is distinguished. The species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 88 and map 70). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 395.
