This widespread species is native also in N. America. In same parts of the range, especially in its periphery, the distribution is not as continuous as the map indicates. It belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 60 and map 42). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 220.
