This species occurs along most of the seashores of N. and W. Europe. Further, five closely related taxa are mapped, viz. C. scotica Druce in parts of the British lsles, C. polonica Fröhl. and C. tatrae Borb. In E.C. Europe, C. cyclocarpa Blake and C. tridactylites Banks in eastern N. America.
