Within this polymorphic species, subsp. plantago-aquatica occurs in large parts of Eurasia, subsp. orientale Sam. in C. and E. Asia, subsp. brevipes (Greene) Sam. and subsp. subcordatum (Raf.) Hult. in N. America. The species s. lat. has an almost circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 160 and map 151). Subsp. plantago-aquatica is also found in several parts of Africa, in Chile, Australia and New Zealand, being adventive at least in some of these countries (cf. I. cit.).
