The species s. str. (subsp. glaucum) is restricted to Eurasia (and further spread there by man) but introduced and naturalized in N. America. The subsp. salinum (Standl.) Aellen is native in western N. America and introduced eastwards. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. II, p. 142 and map 133). On the southern hemisphere some different subspecies occur, probably indigenous there. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 133.
