1012 Rhodiola rosea L.

Syn.: Sedum rosea (L.) Scop.

This widespread and polymorphic species has an arctic-montane distribution. Two groups of taxa within this species s. lat. may be distinguished, viz. (1) yellow-flowered taxa with R. rosea s. str., distributed from eastern N. America and Greenland through parts of Europe and N., C. and E. Asia to W. Alaska, and subsp. heterodonta (Hook. fil. & Thoms.) Hult. in C. Asiatic mountains, and (2) purple-flowered taxa, assembled in subsp. integrifolia (Raf.) Hult. For the intricate taxonomy and nomenclature see Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 52. The mapping is more generalized in Asia than in other parts of the range. R. rosea s. str. belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (op. cit., map 33). The species s. lat. has a somewhat irregularly circumpolar distribution. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 196.
