This arctic to boreal-montane species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 104 and map 95). In N. America the common var. utriculata (Boott) Bailey is distinguished. The situation in E. Asia does not seem to be taxonomically and geographically settled (partly confusion with C. rhynchophysa C. A. Mey, no. 535). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 79.
