410 Eriophorum russeolum Fr. ex Hartm.

This arctic-montane, polymorphic species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The taxonomy needs further investigation and the nomenclature is unsettled. Hylander (Nord. kärlväxtfl. 2/1966, p. 8 f.) distinguishes two subspecies, viz. subsp. russeolum and subsp. rufescens (Ands.) Hyl. (E. medium Ands. in Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 285) with about the same distribution in Eurasia. In eastern N. America probably subsp. russeolum (or closely related taxon) occurs. They are mapped together here. However, an attempt is made to map two varieties of E. russeolum, viz. var. albidum Nyl., spread disjunctly over large parts of N. Eurasia and N. America, and var. majus Sommier occurring in E. Asia and Alaska. E. russeolum s. str. is reported among the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 224 and map 205). The present map may be regarded as preliminary.
