Empetrum nigrum subsp. nigrum
1463 Empetrum nigrum L. subsp. nigrum
This boreal and partly montane subspecies is widely distributed in Eurasia and (partly?) N. America. Another E. nigrum taxon with unisexual flowers, viz. subsp. japonicum (Good) Hult., occurs in E. Asia. Knowledge of the distribution of subsp. nigrum is insufficient, especially in Asia and N. America (a real gap between the E. and W. population?). In northern Europe subsp. nigrum is a lowland plant avoiding the mountains and the arctic region (cf. the other E. nigrum taxa on map no. 1464). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 326.
