This polymorphic species grows on sandy seashores and saline inland soil and obviously, also indigenously, in western N. America, S. America and S. Africa. Several lower taxa are distinguished within this area (see int. al. Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 296; Munz & Keck, Calif. Fl. 1959, p. 1405; F l. Eur. 5/1980, p. 104). The species is reported among the amphi-atlantic plants by Hultén (Amphi-atl., p. 296 and map 278). It has been introduced into New Zealand. Cf. also world map by H. Weimarck in Sv. Bot.
