This polymorphic, calciphilous species occurs in most of Europe (except NE and partly E) and the adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. For Europe Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 341 reports five subspecies (incl. subsp. mascula, mainly in W. and W. C. Europe). To these may be added subsp. pinetorum Camus in Asia Minor. The map may be partly incomplete.
