Within this species some lower taxa are distinguished (cf. Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 250). The species s. lat. occurs as an indigenous plant in most of Europe, in C. Africa (var. afromontana Hubb.), E. Asia, eastern N. America and southern S. America. Thus, the species is bipolar. Human activities, especially forest clearings, have favoured the dispersal. It has been introduced into New Zealand. The species is reported among the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, op. cit., p. 250 and map 232). See also world map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 51.
