This sea-shore plant is restricted to the coasts of N. (except extreme N), W. and S. Europe and N. Africa. Some of the Baltic-Bothnian occurrences are casual. It has been introduced and planted in several places in eastern and western N. America, Australia and New Zealand. The population in the Mediterranean region and Portugal is distinguished as subsp. arundinacea H. Lindb. (Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 236). The closely related N. American A. breviligulata Fem. Occurs along the east coast, St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes.
