This Eurasiatic species includes a Scandinavian population and separate from this, an East European and Asiatic population. The latter is described as A. excelsum Rchb. but is considered to be identical (or almost identical) with A. septentrionale. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 156.
