1694 Pedicularis palustris L.

This species is mainly restricted to Europe. According to Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 272 f. it includes three subspecies, viz. subsp. palustris dominating S of a dash-and-point line on the map, subsp. borealis (Zett.) Hyl. dominating N of a denticulate line through Fennoscandia, and subsp. opsiantha (E. Ekm.) E. Almq. in N. and E. Europe. The species may not be native in N. America (cf. however Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 1299). The present distribution is amphi-atlantic (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 160 and map 141; cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 405). The closely related P. karoi Freyn in Asia is also mapped. lts relation to E. palustris subsp. opsiantha is uncertain (cf. Fl. Eur., I. cit.).
