This species occurs in large parts of Europe (and locally in W. Asia) as well as of N. America. Var. japonica Hack. is distinguished in E. Asia. The species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 264 and map 246). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 57.
