629 Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.

Syn.: Q. sessiliflora Salisb.

This species is restricted to Europe. It shows on the whole a more western tendency of distribution than Q. robur (no. 630). The hatched area in the southern third of the Apennine Peninsula and the dot on Sicily probably represent intermediates to Q. dalechampii Ten. South of the broken line through Europe introgressions with Q. pubescens Willd. occur. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 122.
