478 Carex nigra (L.) Reich.
Syn.: C. goodenowii Gay, C. Jusca All., C. vulgaris Fr.
This polymorphic species is widely distributed in Europe and occurs also in W. Asia and eastern N. America. For taxonomy and nomenclature of the European C. nigra population, see Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 321 f. C. juncella (Fr.) Th. Fr. (C. nigra var. juncea [Fr.] Hyl.) is mapped separately (no. 479). The rest of the C. nigra taxa in Eurasia and eastern N. America are brought together on the present map, which, particularly where the Asiatic area is concerned, is uncertain and incomplete. The distribution is amphiatlantic (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 126 and map 107). World map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 70. The reports of C. nigra from New Guinea and Australia may refer to some closely related taxon. Some other related taxa in E. and SE. Asia and W. and NW. America are tentatively mapped in Hultén, op. cit., map 108.
