This widespread species is considered to originate from the Mediterranean region from where it has spread as a weed over large areas of Europe, Asia and N. America and to many places on the southern hemisphere. It has nowadays a discontinuous circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 210 and map 202). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 368.
