1179 Prunus padus L.

Syn.: Cerasus padus (L.) Delarbre, Padus avium Mill.

This widespread, Eurasiatic species is somewhat variable, and a few lower taxa are distinguished, for instance subsp. borealis Caj. occurring in the mountains of Fennoscandia and C. Europe from the Vosges to the Carpathians and SE. Alps (Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 80), and var. pubescens Reg. & Till. (syn.: P. asiatica Kom.) in the eastern part of the range, approximately E of the double line on the map. Var. cornuta Wall. (syn.: P. cornuta [Steud.] Carr.) in the Pamir-Himalayan mountains is also tentatively mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 226.
