This polymorphic species s. lat. is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. It includes several taxa, int. al. subsp. pallidum (With.) Fr. (syn.: P. tomentosum Schrank) and subsp. nodosum (Pers.) Fr. (syn.: P. nodosum Pers.) in the boreal belt. Other taxa are distinguished, which are native to other parts of the world. European taxa are introduced into many extra-European countries. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 244 and map 236).
