This widespread species occurs from W. Europe to E. Asia (with gaps in Asia?). It has been introduced into Farther India and New Zealand. The population in eastern N. America is distinguished as var. cisatlanticum Fem. The species is reported among the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 146 and map 128). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 56.
