This variable species is widely distributed in Eurasia. For Europe, five subspecies are distinguished (FI. Eur. 1/1964, p. 242). Four of them are mapped together, including var. brevipes Hara in E. Asia with Japan. The arctic-boreal subsp. boreale (F. Nyl.) Tutin (syn.: T. rariflorum Fr.), restricted to N. Europe, is mapped separately.
