This widely cultivated species originates mainly from S. and W. Europe. It has often escaped from gardens. Its original distribution area can only be indicated tentatively (S of the broken line). However, some authors consider it as native also in Denmark and S. Sweden (Skåne and Öland). It is introduced and naturalized in N. and parts of C. Europe, Japan, N. and S. America, Philippines and New Zealand at least. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 292.
