This species is mainly restricted to Europe. Its dispersal has been favoured by clearings in the rural landscape. Northwards it is often casual. It has been sparsely introduced into India and China and into N. America, in this case probably more than the map shows. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 46.
